West End Garage: car repairs and servicing in Cockburn Central

What to check before you book a workshop

Any business carrying out paid repairs on a vehicle in Western Australia must hold a licence under the Motor Vehicle Repairers Act 2003, and the individual doing the work must be certified for that class of repair. The register is public and searchable through Consumer Protection WA, so it takes a minute to confirm before you hand over keys.

Questions worth asking

• Logbook servicing does not void a new-car warranty. An independent workshop can service a vehicle still under manufacturer warranty provided the correct schedule, parts and fluids are used and the book is stamped. You do not have to return to the dealer.
• Get a written quote and agree how extras are handled. Ask to be called for approval before any additional work is carried out, rather than finding it on the invoice.
• Ask for the old parts back. It is a simple, standard request and a reasonable workshop will say yes without hesitation.
• Clarify whether the diagnostic fee is credited against the repair if you proceed. Practice varies and it is easier settled up front.
