What a business like this typically takes on

Going by the categories on the listing, this is IT support rather than a retail computer shop: setting up and looking after computers and networks for small businesses, security work such as backups and protection against malware, and internet or connectivity services. The listing does not spell out its services, so ask whether they take on home users, one-off jobs, or only ongoing business support.

Before you engage an IT provider

• Ask whether work is charged by the hour, by the job, or on a monthly support plan, and what the minimum charge is.
• Ask how quickly they respond when something is down, and whether support is on site, remote or both.
• Make sure you hold your own administrator passwords and know where your backups are kept.
• Get the scope of any security or network work in writing before it starts.
